Agatha Christie: Tommy and Tuppence Mysteries

Picture
For Agatha Christie fans, this delightful and amusing revisit to the classic Tommy and Tuppence mysteries is enhanced by the listening experience. James Warwick captures the two detectives as the listener gets to join in the fun of figuring out whodunit. From the Russian spies to the dapper British bourgeois, each character is delivered expertly, and it's easy to follow the action as the partners in crime alternately solve each puzzle and try to outdo, not only the criminal, but each other. Although first published in 1929, this Tommy and Tuppence still captures the imagination. For mystery buffs it's a "must-have" for the audiobook shelf.
When the British Secret Service asks them to take over the International Detective Agency—a suspected Bolshevik spy information drop—Tommy and Tuppence jump at the chance. Told to watch for "blue letters with a Russian stamp" and visitors mentioning the number "16," they nonetheless have time for a variety of cases as they pose as the agency’s director and secretary. As an amateur private detective, Tommy takes inspiration from and impersonates other great detectives from crime fiction. While fulfilling their role for British Intelligence, they breeze their way through 15 other cases, solving murder mysteries, a jewel robbery, and rounding up gangs of smugglers and counterfeiters. Originally published in 1929, this exciting whodunit is dramatically read by perennial favorite James Warwick.

The Moving Finger: A Miss Marple Mystery

Picture
'Beyond all doubt the puzzle in The Moving Finger is fit for experts.' The Times

Agatha Christie: Murder is Easy

Picture
Retired police officer and occasional sleuth Luke Fitzwilliam wasn’t thrilled to be stuck next to dotty old Miss Fullerton on the London-bound train. But at least she was amusing, regaling him with tall tales of "perfect murders" in the quaint village of Wychwood. When Miss Fullerton turns up dead, Luke becomes seriously worried and takes on the case. A visit to isolated Wychwood confirms his fears: There’s a dark and dangerous secret that is dispatching the locals. Actor Hugh Fraser gives a captivating reading of this elaborate, engaging whodunit.

The result is a total plan, tailor-made for each individual, to reestablish the body's essential balance with nature; to strengthen the mind body connection; and to use the power of quantum healing to transcend the ordinary limitations of disease and aging--in short, for achieving Perfect Health.

John Grisham. The Summons

Picture
Law professor Ray Atlee and his prodigal brother, Forrest, are summoned home to Clanton, Mississippi, by their ailing father to discuss his will. But when Ray arrives the judge is already dead, and the one-page document dividing his meager estate between the two sons seems crystal clear. What it doesn't mention, however, is the small fortune in cash Ray discovers hidden in the old man's house--$3 million he can't account for and doesn't mention to brother Forrest, either.
Ray's efforts to keep his find a secret, figure out where it came from, and hide it from a nameless extortioner, who seems to know more about it than he does, culminate in a denouement with an almost biblical twist. It's a slender plot to hang a thriller on, and in truth it's not John Grisham's best in terms of pacing, dramatic tension, and interesting characters (except for Harry Rex, a country lawyer who was the judge's closest friend and in many ways is the father Ray wishes he'd had. He's so vivid he jumps off the page). But Grisham's legions of fans are likely to enjoy The Summons even if it lacks the power of some of his classic earlier books, like The Firm, The Brethren, and The Testament.

H. G. Wells. The Invisible Man

Picture
One of the most famous scientific fantasies ever written, this highly imaginative tale focuses on the powers and bold ventures of a scientist who, after discovering the means to make himself invisible, unleashes a bizarre streak of terror on the inhabitants of an English village.

Dalai Lama. The Path to Tranquility

Picture
Wouldn't it be nice to have a handy collection of highlights from the Dalai Lama's writings and teachings?
A mezzo-mezzo book from the Dalai Lama (Ethics for the New Millennium, p. 1044). This collection of excerpts from the the Tibetan leader's writings and speeches is organized like Meditations for Women Who Do Too Muchthe reader is encouraged to meditate on a different snippet each day. The excerpts range from a description of a Calcutta hospital to a cautionary note about marriage, from a pronouncement that the media should worry more about the common good than ratings to musings on generosity. The Dalai Lama combats the deconstructionists, asserting that whenever one reads a book, one must consider the context in which the author wrote it. He trots out the clich that ``there is nothing like teaching to help one learn'' and suggests that, in order to change the world, one should start with changing one's own behavior. One wishes for a more heavy-handed editor. The readings seem thrown together randomly, and too many of the selections are utterly banal. Do we really need to spend May 12 reflecting on the fact that when the Dalai Lama loses his temper with someone, he later apologizes? Dip into this book, but don't make it your daily companion for a year.

Ernest Hemingway. The Old Man and the Sea

Picture
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal -- a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for literature.

Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes Short Stories

Picture
Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective of them all. He sits in his room, and smokes his pipe. He listens, and watches, and thinks. He listens to the steps coming up the stairs; he watches the door opening - and he knows what question the stranger will ask. In these three of his best stories, Holmes has three visitors to the famous flat in Baker Street - visitors who bring their troubles to the only man in the world who can help them.

Virginia Woolf. Jacob's Room

Picture
Impressionistic novel by Virginia Woolf, published in 1922. Experimental in form, it centers on the character of Jacob Flanders, a lonely young man unable to synthesize his love of classical culture with the chaotic reality of contemporary society, notably the turbulence of World War I. The novel is an examination of character development and the meaning of a life by means of a series of brief impressions and conversations, stream of consciousness, internal monologue, and Jacob's letters to his mother. In zealous pursuit of classicism, Jacob studies the ancients at Cambridge and travels to Greece. He either idealizes or ignores the women who admire him. At the end of the novel all that remains of Jacob's life are scattered objects in an abandoned room.

J. K. Rowling. The Tales of Beedle the Bard

Picture
The Tales of Beedle the Bard played a crucial role in assisting Harry, with his friends Ron and Hermione, to finally defeat Lord Voldemort. Fans will be thrilled to have this opportunity to read the tales in full. An exciting addition to the canon of Harry Potter, the tales reveal the wonderful versatility of the author, as she tackles with relish the structure and varying tones of a classic fairy tale. There are five tales: "The Tale of the Three Brothers", recounted in Deathly Hallows, plus "The Fountain of Fair Fortune", "The Warlock's Hairy Heart", "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot", and "Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump". Each has its own magical character and will bring delight, laughter and the thrill of mortal peril.

Danielle Steel. Coming Out

Picture
In her 67th novel (following May's The House) bestselling author Steel (more than 530 million copies sold) fashions a plot around a single event: an invitation to a debutante ball in New York City. Attorney Olympia Crawford Rubinstein manages to juggle a challenging full-time job; a loving relationship with her second husband, Harry (an appeals court judge who is her former law professor); the care of their five-year-old son, Max, and her three older children from a previous marriage. Olympia's first husband, Chauncey, is a stereotypical, upper-class snob, with no job but a passion for playing polo. Harry, son of Holocaust survivors, champions liberal causes. When Olympia's teenage twin daughters, Veronica and Virginia, are invited to an exclusive "coming out" ball, everyone's lives are thrown into turmoil. Most of the book revolves around the arguments and disagreements spurred by the invitation, and Steel appears overly didactic as she tries to pump life into the simplistic setup: Olympia's Jewish mother-in-law, Afro-American law partner and gay older son are trotted out like polo ponies at auction.

Agatha Christie. Postern of Fate

Picture

100 Ways To Motivate Yourself

Picture
Live the life you've always wanted to live! 100 Ways to Motivate Yourself is packed with techniques for breaking down negative barriers and pessimistic thoughts that prevent you from fulfilling your goals and dreams. It's easy to get stuck in a humdrum life and only fantasize about what "could have been." Motivational speaker Steve Chandler helps you change that way of thinking to what "will be." His ideas will help you create an action plan for living out your vision.

You will be intrigued at some of the real-life experiences upon which Steve has based his techniques—from Arnold Schwarzenegger, who told the author in 1976 that he was going to be the number one box office star in Hollywood (at the time, Arnold was only a body builder with a heavy Austrian accent), to Leonard Nimoy, whose life was reshaped through the rational, logical thought of Spock, the character he played on Star Trek.

100 Ways to Motivate Yourself is filled with proven methods for changing the way you think and developing self-creation. Steve draws on the feedback he's received from corporate and public seminar students to ensure that his methods work.

Wilbur Smith. A Sparrow Falls

Picture
'Mark never heard the Mauser shot for the bullet came ahead of the sound. There was only the massive shock in the upper part of his body, and then he was hurled backwards with a violence that drove the air from his lungs. The earth opened before him, and as he fell, there was a sensation of being engulfed in a swirling vortex of blackness and he knew for just a fleeting instant of time that he was dead'. From the trenches of France, General Sean Courtney comes back to fame, fortune and a seat in the Government. Mark Anders, the courageous young South African whom he has come to regard as his own son, returns to nothing, his grandfather murdered, his property seized by an unknown company. At the bottom of the mystery is Sean's son Dirk, the jealous, violent and power-crazed genius whose all-consuming hatred can only end in blood.

Bill Clinton. My Life

Picture
An exhaustive, soul-searching memoir, Bill Clinton's My Life is a refreshingly candid look at the former president as a son, brother, teacher, father, husband, and public figure. Clinton painstakingly outlines the history behind his greatest successes and failures, including his dedication to educational and economic reform, his war against a "vast right-wing operation" determined to destroy him, and the "morally indefensible" acts for which he was nearly impeached. My Life is autobiography as therapy--a personal history written by a man trying to face and banish his private demons.

In the form of a virus called V16, Galen has developed an effective treatment for many incurable genetic diseases; the problem is that when V16 isn't expressly tailored for each individual patient's DNA, the results are disastrous. Enter virologist Lt. Col. Frank Hartman, recruited by the federal Biohazard Agency to catch Galen and create an antidote. As Frank and his team work frantically, romantic threads unspool, while Galen insists that if the government would just stay out of his way, he could save countless lives. Based on Johnston's screenplay for Card's 1977 story Malpractice, the novel plays out with few surprises, but raises pertinent regulatory questions.

Barack Obama. The Audacity of Hope

Picture
In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics–a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the “endless clash of armies” we see in Congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of “our improbable experiment in democracy.” He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment.
At the heart of this audiobook is Senator Obama’s vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. Underlying his stories about family, friends, members of the Senate, and even the president is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus.
A senator and a lawyer, a professor and a father, a Christian and a skeptic, and above all a student of history and human nature, Senator Obama has written a book of transforming power.

Picture
The human body evolved to live well and fight off disease on a supply of only a dozen or so essential nutrients. Unfortunately, modern meat-laden, high-sugar diets provide catastrophically inadequate levels of those nutrients. Scientific research consistently indicates nationwide vitamin and mineral deficiencies in our country, and we spend over a trillion dollars each year on disease care. Andrew Saul has seen enough of this situation, and in Doctor Yourself, he gives you the power you need to change it.

Dr. Saul explodes the myth that an army of medical specialists and pharmaceutical drugs are necessary to maintain our health. American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies at the Founding of the Republic

Picture
Reviewers embraced American Creation for the same reason they enjoyed Ellis’s previous books: his treatment of the Founding Fathers is neither idolatrous nor iconoclastic. He portrays them as the fascinating, complex, and human characters they really were. Some historians disagreed with details of Ellis’s interpretation, but they tended to emphasize that, like the founders themselves, Ellis has created a useful framework in which the ideas of the Revolutionary period can be discussed. Ellis’s prose, on the other hand, did not inspire any comparisons with Thomas Jefferson’s; in fact, several reviewers suggested another round of editing. But all critics agreed that the author’s masterful handling of the material checked and balanced the occasional tyrannical sentence.

The Ghost Mountain Boys: Their Epic March and the Terrifying Battle for New Guinea. The Forgotten War of the South Pacific!

Picture
Stephen Hoye gives a solid reading of CampbellOs account of the battle for New Guinea during WWII. The campaign, largely eclipsed by the struggle over Guadalcanal, was a pivotal struggle that might even have been a turning point in the Pacific theater. In the long, grueling, dirty fight men were felled by disease as often as by bullets. Listeners follow individual soldiers, the 32nd DivisionOs Ghost Mountain Boys, from their training through the campaign. Campbell often quotes from letters home. He also quotes from Japanese journals found later. This gives the book real humanity. Hoye doesnOt try to give each character a distinctive voice, but he varies pace and tone to show when individuals are speaking for themselves

The Ultimate Battle: Okinawa, 1945. The Last Epic Struggle of World War II

Picture
Using the same grunt's-eye-view narrative style of Sloan's acclaimed Brotherhood of Heroes, The Ultimate Battle is the full story of the largest land-sea-air battle ever waged by the United States, a battle whose staggering casualties and take-no-prisoners ferocity led Truman to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. From April through June 1945, more than 250,000 American and Japanese lives were lost, including those of nearly 150,000 civilians who either committed suicide or were caught in the crossfire. The book tells this gripping story of heroism, sacrifice, and death in the largest land-sea-air operation in U.S. history.

The Secret Universal Mind Meditation

Picture
The Secret Universal Mind Meditation imparts the sacred truth spiritual masters have taught for centuries. This truth is real and powerful. It starts by changing your belief system, slowly, subtly and gently while you sleep. As you are lulled into blissful slumber, secret messages are whispered into your ears--first audibly, and then just below the level of consciousness.

Over days and weeks to come, your conscious and your subconscious mind will accept the secret as true. Without knowing how or why, everything you need and desire will come to you through communing with the Universal Mind.

With this program you will overcome limiting, outmoded beliefs that have hindered your ability to create the life you've always wanted. While theta and delta waves gently lull you to sleep, your mind is re-programed with new knowledge and beliefs that unleash your power to create a new reality; a reality that fulfills your deepest needs and desires.

Through nightly listening, your subconscious will accept the information it receives as true. When this happens, what you need and desire comes to you. And there is nothing you need to do except relax and listen. If you fall asleep while listening, that's even better; the messages are still absorbed into your subconscious. The results are profound.
