Collectors' Coins Great Britain 2009
The 2009 Collectors' Coins Great Britain" (or "CCGB2009" for short) contains comprehensive listings of all British coins from approximately the last 200 years with their varieties listed, values in up to five states of preservation and yearly mintage numbers. It includes the usual wealth of information about the coin weights, sizes and designers. The publisher believes this to be the most detailed coverage of the subject matter available.
Oxford Dictionary of Quotations
Yes, Oscar Wilde's last words, addressed to his ugly wallpaper, were "One of us has to go." Yes, the official advice on how to respond to a local nuclear attack was to "duck and cover." And no, Kirk never said "Beam me up, Scotty." Readers are likely to be both shaken and stirred by this collection of 20,000 quotations, generated by both the intentionally and accidentally brilliant. Each entry includes the briefest of biographies, provenance, and (when necessary) context. Especially helpful are the index based on key words and phrases, and a series of thematic listings such as film titles, advertising slogans, prayers, songs, telegrams and toasts. This new edition includes some of the latest musings by leaders of governments both active and deposed, and some truly startling pronouncements by people who are said to be the brightest lights of pop culture, that is, until they speak without a script. The only apparent downside to this volume is that one can browse, and laugh, for hours and hours.
2010 Standard Catalog of World Coins

The A to Z of the Vikings
This book provides a comprehensive work of reference for people interested in the Vikings, including entries on the main historical figures involved in this dramatic period, important battles and treaties, significant archaeological finds, and key works and sources of information on the period. It also summarizes the impact the Vikings had on the areas where they traveled and settled. There is a chronological table, detailed and annotated bibliographies for different themes and geographical locations, and an introduction discussing the major events and developments of the Viking age.
The A to Z from the Great War to the Great Depression
The A to Z from the Great War to the Great Depression covers this important period in American history with a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on everything from automobiles, chemicals, and electrical goods, to mass entertainment and the rise of Hollywood, radio, and sport.
The A to Z of the Civil War and Reconstruction
The importance of the Civil War and Reconstruction in the history of the United States cannot be overstated. There was a very real possibility that the union could have been sundered, resulting in a very different American history, and probably world history. But the union was held together by tough and determined leaders and by the economic muscle of the North. Following the end of the war, the period of American history known as Reconstruction followed. This was a period construed in many different ways. While the states were once again "united," many of the postwar efforts divided different segments of the population and failed to achieve their goals in an era too often remembered for carpetbaggers and scalawags, and Congressional imbroglios and incompetent government.
The A to Z of Early North America
The indigenous populations of North America created impressive societies, engaged in trade, and had varied economic, social, and religious cultures. Over the past century, archaeological and ethnological research throughout all regions of North America has revealed much about the indigenous peoples of the continent. This book examines the long and complex history of human occupation in North America, covering its distinct culture as well as areas of the Arctic, California, Eastern Woodlands, Great Basin, Great Plains, Northwest Coast, Plateau, Southwest, and Subarctic. Complete with maps, a chronology that spans the history from 11,000 B.C. to A.D. 1850, an introductory essay, more than 700 dictionary entries, and a comprehensive bibliography, this reference is a valuable tool for scholars and students. An appendix of museums that have North American collections and a listing of archaeological sites that allow tours by the public also make this an accessible guide to the interested lay reader and high school student.
The A to Z of the Old South
Numerous cross-referenced entries on prominent individuals, including Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, Robert E. Lee, and Abraham Lincoln, as well as others on policies of the time that have since slipped into oblivion are all covered in this book. Economic, social and religious backgrounds trace the seemingly inevitable path to secession, war, and defeat. This reference also includes an introductory essay, a chronology, and a bibliography of the epoch.
The A to Z of the Arab-Israeli Conflict
For over a century, the conflict between the Arabs and Jews has remained the most intractable problem confronting the world. Hardly a day passes that the Arab-Israeli Conflict is not headlined in the media. It has turned the Arabs and Israelis against one another and embittered relations within the two communities, while drawing the rest of the world into the circle of disruption.
The A to Z of the Arab-Israeli Conflict provides factual background through an introductory essay, a chronology, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the more significant persons, places and events, including the various wars and negotiations. The history, religion, culture, and archeology that this rivalry has sparked between the Arabs and Israelis over the same piece of territory is traced in this book, which offers the essential details using neutral terms and thereby allowing readers to draw conclusions for themselves.

Historical Dictionary of Terrorism
Separately, the authors have researched and written about terrorism for either the newspapers or for the U.S. government. Though they reach back into antiquity to include such topics as the Zealots and the "assassins," the majority of their work deals with the 20th century and its explosion of terrorist movements. As the authors explain in the introduction, terrorism is primarily a political act?although the culprits can range from government agencies to "terrorists for hire." The articles are informative and fairly extensive, some covering several pages, and the scope covers not only familiar people and topics (Che, the IRA) but also more obscure concepts (guilt transference) and events ("Black June"). The articles can serve as either a complete answer to a reference question or the basis for further research. The work includes an extensive bibliography and a glossary of abbreviations, extremely helpful since many groups are known by their initials alone.
Encyclopedia of Modern China
The Encyclopedia of Modern China will enable readers to create their own picture of modern and contemporary China, generating their own interpretation of this or that event by reading one topic in the light of another. The section on primary sources contains a number of rare documents, including one titled ‘‘New Population Theory’’ that, to our knowledge, is the first English translation of the Chinese original. Cross-references and bibliographies, attached to the end of each entry, will help the reader navigate the volumes and locate additional information on the topics covered. We have also designed a ‘‘Thematic Outline of Contents’’ with more than two dozens categories, as well as a chronology, an annotated general bibliography, and a comprehensive glossary of Chinese characters. When combined with the subject index, these features add context for the reader, making the encyclopedia a very user-friendly set.
Encyclopedia Britannica 2009: Book of the Year
The year 2008 was one of momentous change and wild uncertainty. Though many concerns were raised about China’s prospects for mounting the Olympic Games, Beijing triumphed in spectacular form and staged many of the sporting events in uniquely designed venues. Later in the year, the global economic collapse sent the financial markets plunging and investors scrambling and forced consumers to tighten their belts. Worldwide, populations that were already struggling to meet basic needs were further hampered by soaring food prices.
Meanwhile, freegans, individuals dedicated to finding alternatives to a consumerist economy, munched on discarded vegetarian foodstuffs. A fractious U.S. presidential campaign resulted in the election of Democrat Barack Obama, who made history as the first African American to win that office…

Magill's Encyclopedia of Science: Animal Life
This illustrated encyclopedia is a major revision and update of the six-volume Magill's Survey of Science: Life Science, published in 1991. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines in the life sciences, and most are affiliated with academic institutions. There are 385 signed main entries, ranging in length from 1000 to 3000 words each; 108 articles are updates from the previous edition, while 277 are new entries. The entries cover a wide variety of topics related to animal life and include articles on subjects such as biodiversity and defense mechanisms as well as those on specific species or individual animals. Each entry begins with ready-reference information and a list of principal terms with definitions. Species entries include a sidebar listing basic facts such as classification, geographical location, habitat, life span, and the anatomical features that make the species unique. The arrangement is strictly alphabetical, which means that specific animals or animal groups are intermingled with general topics, issues, and concepts; "cloning" is followed by "cockroaches," for instance, and "elk" by "embryology." This arrangement functions well for the intended audience of high school, undergraduate, and general readers but could prove frustrating for the younger student preparing a report on a specific animal. The illustrations consist of black-and-white photographs and are neither as numerous nor as exciting as those in Facts on File's three-volume The Encyclopedia of Mammals or DK's one-volume Animal, either of which is a better choice for libraries needing an animal encyclopedia only. The strength of the Magill's set is its comprehensive coverage of animal life science generally, not just individual animals.
Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition
The current status of human nutrition is clearly summarized in this three-volume set. The editorial board and the contributors are highly respected academics and practicing nutritionists from around the world. Topic coverage is extensive, ranging from nutrition policies in developing countries to pregnancy and steatorrhea. Each entry ranges from four to 48 pages in length and contains a list of contents, references to related articles, and suggestions for further reading. The intended readership is students, researchers, physicians, social workers, and nutritionists, but the writing is such that the work is accessible to the lay reader. An added feature is a web-accessible electronic version, which is available to libraries at a minimal yearly fee and can be IP restricted for colleges and universities (that is, the web page looks at the numerical Internet address of the computer logging to the web page to make sure it's authorized to log in). The main drawback is the high price, which puts the set out of the reach of most public and small college libraries. They may instead want to look at David Bender's Nutrition: A Reference Handbook

Encyclopedia of Life Science
Intended to complement the material typically taught in high school biology and introductory college biology courses, "Encyclopedia of Life Science" is a new, two-volume reference set that reflects the fundamental concepts and principles identified by the National Committee on Science Education Standards. More than 200 comprehensive entries are arranged by topic or theme and cover concepts, theories, sub-disciplines, biographies, common methods, and techniques relevant to modern science. The definitive reference in the area of life science, this accessible full-color resource provides historical perspectives, portrays science as a human endeavor, and gives insight into the process of scientific inquiry by incorporating biographical profiles of people who have contributed significantly to the development of the life sciences. Processes that shape the natural world and life within it are also discussed in this in-depth encyclopedia. Instruments and methodology-related entries focus on the tools and procedures used by scientists to gather information, conduct experiments, and perform analyses. Other entries summarize the major branches and sub-disciplines of life science and describe selected applications of the information and technology gleaned from life science research.

Encyclopedia of Addictions
The 200 entries in this set by science writer Hollen (The Reproductive System) "discuss symptoms, causes, prevalence, prevention, and treatment as well as associated terms such as compulsion, tolerance, denial, and withdrawal," and 200 more terms appear as cross-references. In addition to articles describing particular drugs, dependencies, and disorders, figures such as Bill W., Carrie Nation, and Betty Ford are also profiled. Entries and cross-references are listed in alphabetical order, with in-text cross-references to other entries in bold for ease of use. The text is free of jargon and accessible to general adult readers. The main drawback is the set's price, which is prohibitively high for the amount of content offered. BOTTOM LINE Facts On File's slightly older The Encyclopedia of Addictions and Addictive Behavior (2005) contains virtually the same information at less than half the price and is better organized; statistics, organizations, and relevant terminology are included with the entry, thus eliminating the need to flip to an appendix.

Encyclopedia of Anthropology
Five substantial volumes, with more than 1,000 entries, encompass information on all of the various aspects of the field. According to the accompanying literature, those are physical/biological anthropology, archaeology, cultural/social anthropology, linguistics, and applied anthropology. Articles on related topics such as biology, evolution, geology, paleontology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and theology are also included. Approximately 230 of the entries are biographical. The entries themselves are clearly written in language accessible for an undergraduate student or informed user but are substantial enough to be of value to the more advanced researcher.
Encyclopedia of Global Warming and Climate Change
Grade 10 Up—A useful reader's guide and a colorful 16-page introduction precede this encyclopedia's 750 articles. Volume 1 also offers a chronology that covers the subject from 4.5 billion years ago to 2007 and notes contributors and their affiliations. However, many of them are listed as "independent scholars" and their affiliation or expertise is unclear. An alphabetical list of the set's entries appears in each volume. The articles cover a variety of topics relating to global warming and climate change such as social effects and scientific causes. Entries on individual countries and key figures are also included. While the articles are full of useful information, the writing is not always clear and there are grammar issues throughout that make for choppy reading. In addition, some of the content is most appropriate for AP students. The layout is basic, featuring double columns of text on each page, with a few black-and-white stock photographs scattered throughout.

Encyclopedia of New Jersey
Few entities have endured a negative reputation to the extent that the state of New Jersey has. Because of its association with toxic waste and organized crime, many neglect to give the state the regard that its early and recent history and accomplishments would warrant. Mappen, a former vice chairman of the Task Force on New Jersey History and executive director of the New Jersey Historical Commission, was inspired by the Encyclopedia of New York City (Yale Univ., 1995) to produce a similar work that would define and illuminate what New Jersey is. His coeditor, Lurie, is chair of the history department of Seton Hall University.

The Holocaust Encyclopedia
Although most libraries now contain many shelves of books describing various aspects of the Holocaust, comprehensive one-volume histories or reference books on the subject are rare. Thus, The Holocaust Encyclopedia, edited by Walter Lacquer (a modern European historian who has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, and Tel Aviv University, among others), fills an important gap in existing Holocaust literature. His book gathers accessible articles by many of the world's leading Holocaust scholars on the full range of people and places involved, from Adolph Hitler and Gypsies to Russia and the Soviet Union. The articles are complemented by a comprehensive chronology and an excellent bibliographical essay, and by almost 300 illustrations, including maps and photographs. The photographs, by Adam Kaczkowski, are particularly well chosen and designed. Photography's importance in the act of Holocaust remembrance is poignantly understated by Roger Greenspun in his entry on "Cinema and Television," in which he writes, "This was the first great human catastrophe to have so many pictures taken of it." The Holocaust Encyclopedia will become the first stop in the library for high school students wishing to learn about the Holocaust. It will also provide college students and adults with a reliable, authoritative, big-picture perspective on aspects of a genocide that, no matter how fully it is known, will never fully be understood.

Women and War: A Historical Encyclopedia from Antiquity to the Present
War is generally regarded as the province of men, both as brokers and as combatants. The role of women has been a footnote--medical and caregiving functions, camp followers, victims. This encyclopedia is a unique source of information on multiple aspects of women's involvement in war, whether as combatants, opponents, resistance fighters, spies, or in support roles.
The nearly 500 alphabetically arranged entries written by 136 predominately North American and European subject experts cover women's experiences in war from antiquity (the Greek, Persian, and Roman empires) to the current conflicts in Iraq and Sudan. The articles range from a partial column for subjects such as World War II resistance-fighter Eva Maria Buch to several pages for topics like United States, home front during World War II. While numerous entries deal with specific women, a considerable number deal with broad topics (Rape in war; Terrorists, women) and historically significant incidents or movements (Islamic resistance movements, women in; Vietnam, women in the Buddhist peace movement) as well as groups or organizations. Articles are clearly written in a style that is, despite the multiple contributors, uniformly readable and accessible. Each entry is followed by see also references as well as a listing of "References for Further Reading," both print and electronic. Sidebars contain primary source material from autobiographical, archival, and press sources. The frequent black-and-white photographs are clearly reproduced and appropriately placed, and they extend the text well. Along with a table of contents, both volumes contain the foreword, the informative introduction, and a "Topic Finder," which is a listing by subject. The second volume contains as well a list of acronyms; a three-page annotated "Select Bibliography" listing works of wider scope on the topic; and a detailed, accurate index.

Encyclopedia of Warrior Peoples and Fighting Groups
Gr 10 Up-From Afghans to Zulus, and from the Spartans and Knights Templar to the Green Berets and the Flying Circus, this volume covers all of the basics on most of the fearsome fighting groups throughout history. They are listed alphabetically by their official name, but if readers don't know that Napoleon's army was called the Grande Arm e, they can find a reference to it under Napoleon in the index. The articles are short (usually one to two pages), and many include a black-and-white reproduction, photo, or map. Some of the pictures are a bit hazy. Each article ends with a brief selection of references. The index includes particular battles as well as individual leaders. The absence of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot seems a bit striking, but otherwise, this is a good reference book that will also be popular with browsers.
