This straightforward, kindly volume provides a logical discussion of weight loss and the steps required to achieve and sustain it. Rippe (Heart Disease for Dummies), founder of the Rippe Lifestyle Institute (a nutrition, exercise and medical research organization), shares his own stories of weight gain and loss in the book's introduction, then spends the following 10 chapters breaking down what he identifies as the most popular weight-loss myths (e.g., "you can't lose weight and keep it off"; "you can lose weight with exercise alone"; "calories don't matter—avoid fats or carbs to lose weight successfully"; "you can boost your metabolism by what, how, and when you eat"). Each chapter includes an explanation of a myth and the kernels of truth and valid research that led to its perpetuation. Of course, the underlying basis for the book is that the way to achieve lasting, healthy weight loss is to follow the Weight Watchers method, and Rippe includes personal triumph stories from followers of that program. That quibble aside, a list of levelheaded suggestions (such as "Identify your five temptation foods. Develop specific strategies for dealing with them in a way that will reinforce learning the skill of flexible restraint") do clear away much of the confusion surrounding weight loss.

Nutrition's straightforward coverage offers more information on disease and government oversight

If you want to be bigger, stronger, faster and more powerful, you have found the book to get you there. This is a great book because it was written by a great coach: Christian Thibaudeau. Like all respected and influential coaches, Christian has a strong background in athletic training, but he's not confined by it. He blends his education and his hands-on experiences into a training philosophy that can benefit anyone from elite athletes to weekend warriors to those of us who just want to look great naked. Yes it's true… after months and months of waiting, the first edition of The Black Book of Training Secrets is finally available. I agree that the title may sound a bit much… after all, most coaches (me included) have shouted high and wide that there's no such thing as secret-training methods. I still believe that to be true. However, there are quite a few things that may very well make the difference between wasting your time in the gym year after year and making seemingly unbelievable progress. While these things may not seem revolutionary to those "in the know," they are indeed "secrets" to most trainees and understanding them will make all the difference in the world as far as gains are concerned. At first I wanted to name the book Thibaudeaubuilding. Although cute, I found it to be quite restrictive. Sure this book will give you a lot of info on how to build muscle and a better physique, but you'll also learn how to maximize your strength, power, and speed, not to mention how to evaluate your needs or the needs of your clients. The book is so inclusive and full of various tips and methods that I needed a name that would at least give you an idea of what it contained.

Healing Back Pain - The Mind-Body Connection

Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain.
